Cinnamon Whiskey Apple Cider is a warm drink that tastes like a bonfire night and smells like Christmas. This Cinnamon Whiskey Apple Cider recipe is warm apple cider, whiskey and a stick of cinnamon, and it’s wonderfully simple.

You can use a ready-made cinnamon whiskey, or you can use your own bourbon and a quick cinnamon syrup. Either way, it’s the best thing to hold when the fireworks go up.

Cinnamon whiskey and warm apple cider, served in a mug with a cinnamon stick. Warm, spiced and apple-sweet.

Ingredients

  • 45 ml (1½ oz) cinnamon whiskey (or bourbon plus 10 ml cinnamon syrup)

  • 180 ml (6 oz) warm apple cider or cloudy apple juice

  • Squeeze of lemon

  • Cinnamon stick and apple slice, to garnish

Method

  • Warm the apple cider gently in a pan until steaming. Don’t boil it.
  • Pour the cinnamon whiskey into a mug.
  • Add the warm cider and a squeeze of lemon and stir.
  • Garnish with a cinnamon stick and an apple slice.

Thomas’s tip

Cinnamon whiskey is sweet and fiery. If you’re using a bourbon with homemade cinnamon syrup, you’ll get a more balanced drink.

What does a Cinnamon Whiskey Apple Cider taste like?

Warm apple and hot cinnamon up front, with whiskey vanilla and caramel behind. It’s sweet, spiced and cosy, with a gentle burn on the finish.

Tips for a better Cinnamon Whiskey Apple Cider

Heat the cider gently. A rolling boil dulls the flavour.

A squeeze of lemon stops the drink being cloying.

Cinnamon Whiskey Apple Cider variations

Use plain bourbon with a cinnamon stick for a drier version. Add a clove or two. For a more spiced version, make Bourbon Mulled Cider, or for a cold alternative the Bourbon Apple Cider.

Best whisky for a Cinnamon Whiskey Apple Cider

A sweet, easy bourbon works best if you’re making your own cinnamon version, because apple and cinnamon are strong. Look for 40% to 45%.
