What the Caskable 100 is, and what it is not

Every bottle I review gets a score out of 100. The Caskable 100 takes the 100 highest of them, from 204 reviewed so far, and puts them in order. Nobody edits the list by hand, me included: change a score on a review and the bottle moves up or down on its own.

Think of it as the index at the back of the book rather than the book itself. It tells you which bottles have done best and what they cost. It does not tell you why, and it deliberately does not repeat the tasting notes, because that is what the individual reviews are for. Every entry links to its full review, so start there once something catches your eye.

The cut-off is currently 75 points, the average across the hundred is 78, and the middle price is £44. A high score is not the same thing as a bargain, so read the price next to it.

How the Caskable 100 is ranked

Rank is decided by score alone, highest first. When two bottles share a score, the cheaper one ranks higher, on the principle that a tie should go to the better deal. If they still tie, it falls back to alphabetical order, which is the least interesting way to settle anything.

Only bottles reviewed on Caskable can appear, and every score is mine, on the 100-point scale explained in the methodology. Prices are UK retail guides for a 70 cl bottle and drift with the shops. The list rebuilds itself whenever a review changes.
